Yalameh is the name given to the colorful southern Iranian carpets woven primarily in and around the village of Aliabad in the southern Iranian province of Fars. Pieces from this origin were formerly called Shekarlu, but they were very rare. They were traditionally more colorful than other southern Iranian pieces, the palettes of which were restricted to reds and dark blues. Yalamehs are hand knotted on a vertical loom; wool warp and good quality wool in the pile, which is usually cropped to a medium height. The most common sizes for Yalamehs are 3' x 2' mats and 5' x 3' throw rugs. Larger sizes are available, but not in any significant quantity.
